As we reflect on Depression Awareness Month (October), it’s important to recognize how depression and mental health have developed in our society, and the possible factors that play a role in its manifestation. In 2022, there were 14.4 deaths due to suicide per 100,000 people, an increase of 16% from 2016. According to the CDC, the highest number of suicides was recorded ever last year, with 49,500 deaths (in the United States). This suicide epidemic has become more apparent to me due to a recent death in my community. A middle-aged father recently took his own life, prompting myself and many others to understand its effects on family and community. Though relations, substances, and various other contributors can play a role in suicide, many studies suggest a link between the rise of social media and it’s impact on our emotional wellness. Becoming self-aware about how technology has transformed our society can help alleviate its negative impacts on our mental health, and possibly prevent spirals of depression.
